If you visit the Terra Nova café at Roath Lake in Cardiff, you’ll find a defibrillator that was donated by Cathy Sharples. The lake was a favourite spot to visit for Cathy and her husband Mike.

Mike passed away while on holiday in Sardinia with Cathy in 2014. The two of them were having a wonderful time when Cathy looked over to Mike in the passenger seat and realised something was wrong, Mike looked unwell and was complaining of chest pains. Cathy said:

“I just knew that Mike was having a heart attack. I rang the ambulance service who were quick to respond but were unfortunately, unable to resuscitate Mike. Due to the severe nature of Mike’s heart attack, the only thing that could have potentially made a difference was access to a defibrillator at the roadside or nearby.”

Spurred on by this knowledge, Cathy knew she wanted to do something for a heart charity back home in Wales and decided on Welsh Hearts. Welsh Hearts is working hard to train a nation of lifesavers and ensure that every community space in wales has the equipment it needs to handle cardiac arrest.

Cathy has ensured Mike has a lasting legacy in his community by working with Welsh Hearts, please raise money in memory of your loved ones to ensure that every person with cardiovascular disease in Wales stands a fighting chance.

There are lots of ways you can honour the memory of your loved one
